Harnessing Your Own Wind and Solar Power

Colorado Springs, Aug. 18, 2008 - El Paso County's Colorado State University (CSU) Extension held a two-part wind and solar power workshop on Aug. 12 which attracted approximately 75 attendees! The workshop was held at the CSU Extension office, 305 South Union Boulevard and began with a catered dinner.

After dinner, attendees learned about the possibility for using windmills to generate significant amounts of energy in El Paso County from John Covert, Executive Director of Colorado Working Landscapes. In his presentation titled, “How to Utilize Wind Energy,” Covert discussed the various types of windmills available to private owners and the various settings in which they could be used. He also fielded questions on a wide range of topics including energy storage, insurance and policy.

In the second half of the two-hour event, Ken Regeleson, owner of Five Star Consultants, provided information about the increasing use of solar panels, the current technology available and their value in his presentation, “Oodles of Energy – Solar Power.” Information about rebates, how to find a certified installer and the future of the solar industry was also presented. Deborah Mathis with Colorado Springs Utilities was on hand to answer questions about how the local utility company can help homeowners with renewable energy projects.

Overall the seminar was a great success. Many attendees were Colorado Springs citizens, but some traveled from places as far away as Woodland Park, Ramah, and Rush to attend. In a program evaluation, one rural citizen commented that after attending the seminar he viewed his land differently and was excited to have “new tools and contacts to pursue alternative energy resources.” Another urban citizen commented that she “enjoyed the entire event” while others commented on the quality of the speakers and presentations.
