Job Requirements: Operates hand clippers, limb cutters, fork lift, auger, air compressor, air hammer air drill, electric generator, paint pumps, hand tools, heating and pressurized equipment, paint mixers and other equipment utilized in traffic signs and pavement markings. Stocks trucks with needed materials, operates various sized trucks and performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on all equipment. Operates various equipment and hand tools for installing, repairing or replacing signs or pavement markings. Operates a propane torch for the application of thermoplastic pavement markings, pavement marking equipment and long line striping machines and equipment and operates pavement grinding equipment for the removal of pavement markings. Sorts and completes service requests and work orders received. Establishes daily route and responds to emergency calls. Maintains records of all work performed. Properly codes completed daily projects for data entry. Installs slip base traffic sign post systems and related hardware. Stocks traffic control devices in appropriate storage facilities. Interprets the MUTCD, TCDH, Federal, State and Local procedures, specifications, standards and Engineering Directives for correct traffic sign and marking placement. Works with chemicals routinely used during the clean-up and maintenance of traffic signing and pavement marking equipment. Surveys El Paso County roads for potential traffic signing and pavement marking replacement needs. Stakes new installation sites for signs and meets with utility locators prior to installing signs. Supports work zone traffic control, including flagging, according to the MUTCD. Assists with traffic sign design and sign fabrication. Performs on-call emergency traffic control devices repair after normal work hours.
Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent. One (1) year experience with the installation and maintenance of traffic signs and pavement markings preferred. Knowledge of traffic sign procedures, standards and proper traffic control procedures as set forth in the MUTCD. Knowledge of El Paso County roadway system and location information preferred. Ability to communicate and work effectively with County staff and the general public. Ability to work independently with minimal instruction. Ability to interpret handbooks, plans and written standards. Ability to understand and utilize traffic signs and traffic markings plans, diagrams, sketches and drawings. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Post conditional physical required.
Any equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the education and experience requirements above. Ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
Licenses OR Certificates: Possess and maintain a valid Colorado Class A or B Commercial Driver's License. Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) Flagger Certification or the ability to obtain within six months of employment. Work Zone Traffic Control Safety Certification or the ability to obtain within six months of employment. IMSA Signs and Markings Level I Certification or the ability to obtain within one year of employment. IMSA Signs and Markings Level II Certification preferred.
Work Conditions: Work is performed outside in adverse weather conditions and temperature extremes. Work exposes the employee to loud noise levels from compressors and related painting and sign equipment for extended periods of time, hazards associated with paint and chemicals and hazards associated with working in and around heavy traffic and under ground electrical wires. Protective equipment is required such as rubber and leather work gloves, safety vests, ear protection, protective aprons, boots, breathing apparatus and safety glasses. Work requires the physical ability to climb and walk on uneven terrain, lift heavy materials and equipment and stand for prolonged periods of time. It also requires the ability to operate a truck or machinery for extended periods of time in confined seating and perform work while bending. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Subject to emergency traffic control devices repair off hours call-out.
